New head at LAC will face challenges

The Montreal Gazette and other Southam newspapers, including the Ottawa Citizen and Saskatoon Star Phoenix, published an article this morning about the newly appointed head of Library and Archives Canada, Guy Berthiaume. The former president of the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec will assume his new responsibilities June 25 and is excepted to face “huge challenges over digitizing Canada’s history in an era of federal budget cuts.” Rose Barker, a spokesperson for the Canadian Association of University Teachers, said electronically uploading every historic record into an online database at the current pace could take 70 years.

Mr. Berthiaume says he looks forward to “working better with stakeholders, working on internal leadership and building morale while re-establishing the bridges with academia and the general public.”
