According to an article in the New York Times about favourite Thanksgiving recipes from across Canada, our Thanksgiving is “little known in the United States, although turkey, stuffing and televised football also dominate the day there.”
As for when we celebrated our first Thanksgiving in Canada and why, the journalist likely used Wikipedia as a source, and it seems no one knows the answer. “Nova Scotia appears to have taken the idea of a harvest festival from the pre-revolutionary American Colonies during the 1750s. Loyalists who went north after the American Revolution also brought the celebration with them.”
Anyway, it’s a fun article with regional recipes from every province and the territories. You’ll be able to test them in time for our neighbours’ Thanksgiving in November.
Some of you in Canada will celebrate today and others Monday. My family and I will be enjoying a turkey dinner this evening and munching on leftovers tomorrow.
Happy Thanksgiving!
