The Cyr family has updated the website, Acadian.org, created by their late father, Yvon Cyr, and they have done a good job updating the look and making it easier to find resources.
If you have Acadian or Cajun ancestry, I recommend you look, in particular, at the long list of links in the History section, from the founding of Acadia and the Filles du roi to the ships of the Acadian expulsion and timelines.
According to the family, when Mr. Cyr first launched his website in 1991, his was the first Acadian-Cajun online resource.
Since Mr. Cyr’s death in 2011, Denis Cyr, his wife, Becky, and their son, Nathan, manage the website. Denis is the son of Yvon Cyr.
When announcing the new website, Mr. Cyr’s family said, “It is in honour of Yvon’s work and memory that we have decided to make these changes to his website. Moving and organizing the many, many pages from Dad’s original website have really opened our eyes to the wealth of information Dad had accumulated.”
Mr. Cyr’s website was the first I followed. I was still in graduate school when I discovered his Acadian page and ordered his CD. I think it was the first. The technology was so new to me I had to go to a school computer lab to use it. He was very generous with his time, and when I emailed with a question he emailed back with an answer. He encouraged me in my studies and career.
Mr. Cyr introduced me to the study of Acadian genealogy and changed my vision of heritage. May he rest in peace.
Thanks for sharing.
