Genealogy collection moved to downtown Toronto

The genealogy and local history collection formerly housed in the Canadiana Department at the North York Central Library and the Ontario Genealogical Society’s library collection was recently transferred to the Toronto Reference Library’s Humanities and Social Sciences Department at 789 Yonge Street — in the heart of downtown Toronto.

This is great news for Torontonians and great news for genealogists visiting Canada’s largest city. Now, the genealogy collection will be stored a block away for Yonge and Bloor where shopping is good, a block away from Yorkville where shopping, dining, and just about everything is fabulous, and where two subway lines interconnect.

Here is what has been re-located to the downtown branch:

  • genealogical periodicals
  • church and parish histories
  • historical atlases
  • city directories and yearbooks
  • indexes to births, marriages and deaths
  • passenger lists and census on microfilm
  • local histories
  • general works on conducting genealogy research
  • how-to guides for those starting to explore their family history

To search for these items, you can use the Toronto Public Library catalogue or the Local History & Genealogy webpage.

You can learn more about the collection on the Toronto Reference Library Blog.

The Ontario Genealogical Society’s collection includes family histories, publications and other materials that can all be reviewed at  the Toronto Reference Library.

Thanks, Margaret D, for sharing on Facebook. And thanks to Patti for telling me about the OGS collection that was moved. Looking forward to seeing you at the OGS conference in Toronto this weekend.

The library collection of the Ontario Genealogical Society was included in the move. Our family histories, publications and other materials can be visited at the Toronto Reference Library.
