Ontario students receive heritage award

Here’s inspiration for a community outreach project for your genealogy society.

Ontario Heritage TrustElementary school students in Oakville, Ontario received the 2015 Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for their work preserving the stories of local veterans.

Last year, the grade seven history class at St. Dominic Catholic Elementary School produced a book, which contains a collection of oral history interviews the students conducted with veterans in their community.

The students compiled the stories into an oral history book, planned and held a ceremony to present the book to veterans, and produced a video to document the event.

The ceremony was held in Bronte Veteran’s Park and involved members of the community, including local veterans, politicians, students and their families. At the ceremony, the students unveiled a plaque commemorating VE Day to ensure that their work would have a lasting and visual impact on the community.

Since 2007, the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Awards have recognized individuals, groups, and communities for exceptional contributions to conserving Ontario’s cultural and natural heritage.

Hats off to this grade seven class and their teacher!
