There is an interesting article about the training farm for British Home Children in Manitoba, set up by Dr. Barnardo, in the January 2016 issue of the British Home Children Advocacy & Research Association newsletter.
The first party of Dr. Barnardo’s children arrived in Canada in the summer of 1882 and were placed through Dr. Stephenson’s receiving home in Hamilton, Ontario. Soon after Barnardo homes opened in Peterborough and Toronto.
Once satisfied the children were settled well in Ontario, Dr. Barnardo set up a receiving home on a large farm for boys in Russell, Manitoba that opened in 1888. The Barnardo boys worked the farm until 1908.
