The British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa’s meeting this Saturday includes five presentations and two great opportunities to shop for the favourite genealogists and young readers on your Christmas list. The public is welcome to attend the lectures and/or shop and browse.
Presentations
At 9:00 a.m., Gloria Tubman will talk about the value and types of parish records when researching your family history.
At 10:00 a.m., members Ken McKinlay, John McConkey, Gillian Leitch, and Duncan Monkhouse, will share some of their exciting discoveries in genealogy research, talking about searching for female ancestors, naval careers, Montreal in the early 20th century, and South Africa.
Shopping opportunities
In between the two sessions, from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m., you will be able to purchase some historical and genealogical gems. Even if you can’t make it to the lectures, drop by to browse, shop, and meet Don Cummer and Rick and Sandy Roberts.
War of 1812 stocking stuffer for young readers
Don Cummer, author of a new series of novels about the War of 1812 for young readers, will be on hand to talk about and sell his books about this pivotal war. The paperback books make an ideal literary stocking stuffer to help the young people in your family develop an interest in Canadian history
The books tell the story of Jake Gibson and Eli McCabe, two boys who swear an oath of allegiance to each other as blood brothers. Jake is the son of a UEL; Eli’s family has recently arrived from the States. The series looks at what the War of 1812 does to their friendship. Don’s first book in the series, Brothers at War, was a finalist in 2014 for the Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People.
Global Genealogy products to purchase
Rick and Sandy Roberts, owners of Canada’s history and genealogy store Global Genealogy, will be on site with a selection of their products.
The presentations will be delivered in the Chamber at Ben Franklin Place, 101 Centrepointe Drive, Ottawa. The shopping opportunities will take place in the Atrium.
More details are available on BIFHSGO’s website.
Disclaimer: Don Cummer is a good friend of mine, who just happens to be a great writer.
