Ancestry adds Montreal non-Catholic marriage and burial indexes

Yesterday Ancestry added two “Web” Quebec databases, Montreal non-Catholic marriage and burial indexes, 1766-1899, to the two it added last week.

PrintA search of these indexes takes you directly to the source website at the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ). In the case of a “Web” database, the search is free for Ancestry subscribers and non-subscribers.

Montreal, Canada, non-Catholic Burial Index, 1767-1899
Montreal, Canada, non-Catholic Marriage Index, 1766-1899

From there, you learn first and last names — often the woman’s maiden name, spouse in the case of a marriage, year of the event, religion, name of the church, and page number in the church record. From there, you can look at the Drouin collection on Ancestry or other subscription sites for the church register.

The indexes from the BAnQ website added to Ancestry last week were
Montreal, Canada, non-Catholic Baptism Index, 1766-1835 and Quebec, Canada, Marriage Contract Index, 1761-1941.

If you do not understand French, you will probably find it easier to access these indexes through Ancestry than on the BAnQ site where the search page is in French. The results are in either French or English, often depending on the language of who was marrying, dying, or being born, and they are pretty easy to understand.

Alberta newspaper BND index
Ancestry also added yesterday a third Canadian “Web” database, Alberta, Newspaper BMD Index, 1889 – 2012. A search will take you to the index compiled from more than 38,000 records by the Alberta Family Histories Society. In the index, you will find the name of the deceased, date of death, possibly the location, date and name of publication, and notes, such as names of children.
