How to easily translate a French website into English

If you read my post yesterday about Genealogie.com’s survey, North American genealogy societies can benefit from survey conducted in France, you may be curious to read all the details about the survey and learn more about their website. If your French is not good or non-existant, you may feel stymied. There’s a solution for you.

Have you tried translating the Genealogie.com website into English through Google Translate? While the translation is not perfect, it does give you an idea of the gist of the information — and some of the translation aren’t bad.

Here’s how to translate a website.

1. Copy the address of the website that interests you, such as www.genealogie.com, by highlighting the address in the bar at the top of your screen. (You can do this by double clicking on the website address to highlight it.) While the address is highlighted, copy by pressing CTRL and C.

2. Go to Google Translate at https://translate.google.com/

3. In the box on the left, paste the website address by pressing CTRL and V.

4. Choose the language you want in the box on the right. Click on Translate.

5. Click on the website address in the box on the right. This will take you to the translated version of the website where you can now go from section to section. Google Translate annotatedThe original Genealogie.com in French is here. The Google Translate version in English is here. Pretty cool, eh?

You can use Google Translate to translate websites in many languages, from Afrikaans to Zulu.

In the case of Genealogie.com’s PowerPoint presentation about the survey, you will find it in the Press section at the bottom of the translated Home page. After you click on that, the presentation should appear close to or at the top of the Press list. Unfortunately, the PowerPoint presentation does not translate with the graphics, but you will be able to see the page numbers and English translation.

Google Translate can be an incredibly useful tool for genealogists.

    Gail,

If one uses Chrome as their browser and the French (or any other language) article is right clicked there is a drop-down box with an option for English translation–precluding the necessity to go to another website i.e. Google translate. As Chrome is owned by Google you are getting the same translation.
