Members encouraged to become involved in revision of bylaws

Although bylaws provide the essential framework for how a genealogical society is managed, I expect few members read them, but we should.

A group of members at the Quebec Family History Society (QFHS) in Montreal has posted a message on the Genealogy Ensemble blog to encourage their fellow members to become involved in the legally required bylaw revision process. They ask members to submit their recommendations for changes by August 13 and to attend a special meeting September 13.Image courtesy of Kittisak/FreeDigitalPhotos.netIn 2011, the government of Canada passed the new Not-for-Profit Corporations Act that governs federally incorporated not-for-profit corporations, such as several genealogical societies across the country. The government gave not-for-profit organizations three years to revise their bylaws to comply with the new legislation.

If federally incorporated genealogical societies want to obtain their Certificate of Continuance to continue as a federally incorporated not-for-profit society, they must submit their revised bylaws by October 17, 2014. If they miss the deadline, the organization will be automatically dissolved.

For more information about the QFHS meeting and the Act, the Genealogy Ensemble blog post is available here.
