OGS provides NextGen with financial and promotional support

Ontario Genealogical Society

The Ontario Genealogical Society and NextGen Genealogy Network (NGGN) today announced a new partnership. OGS has provided NGGN with financial support, along with promotional support in the OGS weekly online newsletter, eWeekly, and an information page on the OGS website.

NGGN is a United States-based charitable organization, founded in 2013 to create a community for young genealogists. It strives to build connections between generations, and welcomes the friendship, mentorship, and support of fellow genealogists of all ages.

David Thompson, an OGS director, said, “NextGen is a virtual society of genealogists under age 50. It is effectively a support group for those who are technologically connected and younger than the average genealogy society demographic.” He added, “NGGN was organized by a number of younger, but active and engaged, genealogists who recognized a need.”

NextGen has no membership fee, just an online presence with their website, Facebook group, YouTube Live interview program, and frequent Twitter meet-ups. They pay their bills with donations.

While the financial support from OGS is apparently “quite minimal,” Canada’s largest genealogical society hopes supporting NextGen will help OGS encourage younger people to become more actively involved in genealogy and perhaps get involved in traditional societies. They see this as an opportunity to expose a new generation to OGS.

OGS President Patti Mordasewicz said, “NextGen represents a new form of genealogical organization, dedicated to supporting the growth and expansion of genealogy.

Steve Fulton, OGS vice-president, is scheduled to take part in a YouTube Live interview with NextGen as part of their regular interview series.

NextGen will be an exhibitor at the OGS 2018 conference in Guelph.
